"MARCHING TOGETHER FOR PEACE"

In 2005 the global outreach of the United Nations Peace forces of the Korean War Memorial Federation (UPKMF, founded December 13th 2004) as a tribute to the armed forces of the 16 nations who came to Korea’s aid when she was invaded in 1950.
Significantly, the sacrifices of those UN troops made it possible for Korea to develop and prosper after the affliction of war.

COLD, WET, WINDY - BUT WE CARRIED ON - REWARDS WERE WAITING AT OUR MEETINGS VENUE

ANZAC DAY 2008

It was a glorious weather day -cool not cold, warm not hot, as the day progressed.
We assembled at about 11 am, and I waited with my BP rising slowly,
waiting for the promised Army Cadets to arrive and the flags for them
to carry - they came almost exactly on time, soon we had them sorted
and looking terrific, nicely spaced and keen to go . They formed the
hollow square as we have been using for the last 8 years (approximately)
showing all the flags of the UN countries serving in Korean War and this
Post war period.
The 2 Korean families arrived looking wonderful in their traditional costumes
( so many of the viewing public commented positively as we marched past )
We had 4 more cadets than we needed , but I organised them to be " stand
by third legs" to assist any of us who started to get a bit "wobbly" They
were used just once.
The veteran soon carried on and joined us at Stella Maris later. The main
group formed up, we guess about 150 people in the body of the march.
Veterans and some carers. We managed to get 4 vehicles, one extra grabbed
by Bernie Scholtz - in case we needed it - we did So it all went off very well.
We paused at WEARY DUNLOP's MEMORIAL, AND FOLLOWING THE TRADITION STARTED
BY JACK PHILPOTT – GAVE OUT THE 3 CHEERS IN WEARY'S MEMORY. The public loved it.
Following the arrival at the Shrine we broke up and made our way to the
Stella Maris Centre by buses donated by the tramways board thanks to Frank Wyatt.
About 100 came back and the fun went on. Even to the point of mass!!!.
Voice’s singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to President Vic Dey , and a raffle.
See you all at the shrine again on Sunday 27th July 2008. Cease fire and Commemoration day.

UNITED NATIONS MEMORIAL CEMETERY – PUSAN –KOREA

In order to honour the services and sacrifices made by the UN Forces during the Korean War, the Parliament of Korea dedicated this land to be used as a cemetery in August 1955 .
The UN General Assembly, accepted resolution #977(x) to establish the United Nations Cemetery in December 1955.
The United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea, is the only one of it’s kind in the world.
Here rest the heroic and brave from a number of UN nations who sacrificed their lives for world peace and freedom.
About 11 000 of the UN’s fallen service men were interred at this memorial cemetery from 1951 – 1954.
Currently interred are: 281 Australians, 378 Canadians, 44 French, 117 Dutch, 17 New Zealanders, 1 Norwegian, 36 Koreans, 11 South Africans, 462 Turkish, 885 British, 36 Americans, 4 unknown and 11 non-combatants.

ANZAC DAY (25th April 2005)

KVAAInc Members - Special members - Guests - Army Reservists - Army cadets as Flag Bearers.

ANZAC DAY 25th APRIL 2004
The day started off damp and cold , but again we were lucky , only light drizzle when we marched off. An estimated 140 veterans and
family members marched .We were assisted by young Army Cadets from two high schools, they carried the flags of each of the 23 nations
who took part in the Korea War under the UN Command, plus the Victorian flag and both the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian
Air force Flags. The 50th Anniversary flag (FREEDOM IS NOT FREE) was carried by Allan Murray, assisted by two of his grandchildren.
Unfortunately, this year we were without the Korean Family (Joon Lee), who over recent years, have marched with us in their traditional dress.
But sadly, the whole family were down with the flu, and as the weather was not promising, they decided to stay home to recuperate
(we wish them well).
The crowds along the route were down a little this year, but I guess the weather did not help, as so many - who would normally have stayed
after the DAWN SERVICE , had been soaked through and had to go home to dry out - we thank them for coming - anyway. Once again the
ABC TV gave a good commentary, and thanks to Lt Col Neil Smith (rtd) an accurate one.
After the march we met up again at the NEW venue , The Stella Maris Seamen's Centre in Lt Collins St Melbourne, A great day was had by all
- the normal raffles earned the KVAA Inc some needed income - and on top of that one of our Members, John (Dusty) Miller, donated a
commemorative medallion of the GHANN railway (Adelaide to Darwin) which Allan Murray auctioned, it raised a good (better than expected)
sum for the Kvaa Inc purse. (Members- the amount can be seen in the next Treasurers report).
We were joined at the STELLA , by members of the MALAYA and BORNEO VETERANS, one of them put on a good show of jokes and
accordian playing with a "dummy" of an old man between his legs -- very funny and a real surprise. Welcome fella's.

ANZAC DAY MARCH 2003
ANZAC Day 2003 parade was an outstanding success in every way.
The attendance was bigger than ever, we seem to be getting bigger instead of smaller.
( plenty of room for all UN Korea Veterans - come and join us).
A best guess figure was 250 marchers, with 3 jeeps, 40 army cadets and reservists (mixed) to carry our flags and others as
be back up, if needed, to assist our walking wounded !!( not needed). 5 Veteran ROK soldiers , A Korean Family
(Dad-Mum and two youngsters - all in national dress) JOON LEE , the father, carried the "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE"
flag inside the hollow square of flags.
Two Melbourne buses were donated to carry those who wished for a ride to the BELLS hotel. Then one of the best get
togethers ever, plenty of food ( thank you Ladies of the WOKS) good cold beer ( not cheap Billy Bell ) and some of the
best fun and lots of laughs .
Make a note on your calenders -- Sunday 27th July 2003 - 12 midday (time to be confirmed) at the Shrine of Remembrance,
Melbourne ,Victoria, for the Commemoration Day Ceremony and the Celebration of the CEASE FIRE .
Bells Hotel afterwards (if the price is better).

Very successful turnout of Veterans and families , first estimate of 350 people , weather was perfect.
The parade was a real spectacle of colour and pride. All the United Nations Command Nations flags were carried
in the parade by scouts of the 1st Gisborne group.
