Burial of Veteran

Gents, I wrote this article which, hopefully, will be published in the local paper before the weekend.
This guy Cannioto was a great little guy, tough as nails, never said much,
but I can only imagine what he had experienced while in Korea.
Thought you might be interested in seeing the story, not to brag, just to give a guy some recognition.
Joe Vogel.
D.J. Sherman. On Saturday the members of Monroe County Chapter #1 Korean War Veterans
will meet at White Haven Memorial Park, near their Memorial to conduct the committal service
for a well know Veteran, at 10:00. Further informaion can be obtained or verified by contacting
Paul Wurzer, 886 Britton Road, Rochester, NY 14616-2911, telephone 663-3153.
Information furnished by Secretary Joe Vogel.

VETERAN IN PICTURE RETURNS TO ROCHESTER

In one of the most famous pictures taken by a combat photographer on October 28th, 1950 during the Korean War,
James Cannioto, a Medic is seen making out the Death Report on a soldier who has been killed,
while another GI comforts the deceased soldier's buddy.
The setting is a rocky hillside, not unlike the Boulders which make up Monroe County Chapter #1's
Korean War Veterans Memorial, in White Haven Memorial Park, on which the famous picture is engraved.
On Saturday, May 20th, James Cannioto's remains will be returned to White Haven Park by an
Honor Guard of Korean War Vets from the Waterloo Chapter of the Korean War Vets,
where the Medic was living at the time of his death, for committal services.
At the time the two Boulders were chosen to become Monroe County Chapter #l's Memorial,
Cannioto was a member, and Past President.
As various pictures were being considered for engraving on the Memorial,
Jimmy remarked that he was the Medic in one of the pictures.
When it was chosen to be engraved, Jimmy promptly made arrangements to buy a burial plot near where the
Memorial was to be located.
Cannioto had been assigned to the 34th Inf. Regiment, of the 24th Division, and after they had taken heavy losses,
was transferred to the 19th Inf. Regiment of the same Division.
At that time, ironically another member of the Monroe County Chapter, Paul Wurzer,
was a forward observer in a Field Artillery Unit, supporting the 19th Regiment.
Cannioto and Wurzer, unknown to each other at the time, had been in Japan prior to the
June 25th invasion by the North Koreans, and were among the first American troops
to try to stop the tide of the invading army.
While heavy losses were sustained by the fairly green American troops, neither man was wounded,
and they may have returned to the States on the same troop ship.
The service will begin at 10:00, at White Haven Memorial Park on Marsh Road,
near the Korean War Veterans Memorial, on which is also engraved the names of
165 Monroe County Veterans who did not get to return home.
Freedom is never Free!!

THE KOREA WAR VERSE

On Wednesday 3rd November 2004 , the RSL National Poppy Appeal was launched in the city square of Melbourne
Australia. Representatives of each of the Wars involving Australia, had a verse of a poem to read to the public.
The Korea war verse was read by two of our K.V.A.A. Inc Members, Mr Joe Shields, and Mr Keith Langdon, both the
Battle of Kapyong survivors and both from 3rd Battalion R.A.R.

For Freedoms Flame.
The image not forgotten - an Australian called to fight,
Sweating on his rifle in the cold Korean night,
Hopelessly outnumbered - chaos all around,
But with fierce determination to defend his patch of ground,
Courage called him forward and his spirit went along,
He refused to be defeated in the BATTLE of KAPYONG,
I was part of that battalion and I know how much he gave,
Now the memory is something, that I will carry to my grave,
FOR FREEDOMS FLAME, HE YEARNED,
AND FOR FREEDOM, I RETURNED.
